It consists mainly of seasonal swamp forest and seasonally flooded grassland with Acacia woodland. The forest is home to over 245 bird species, with 58 species found exclusively in Kagera and many being forest specialists. Notable sightings include the Great Blue Turaco and Blue-breasted Kingfisher. The reserve also boasts an impressive diversity of butterflies, with over 600 species recorded.\n\nBirding here offers opportunities for discovering new species as there have only been a few surveys conducted in the area. Birdwatchers may encounter rare species such as the Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) and Red-faced Barbet (Lybius rubrifacies), which are limited in range.\n\nThe park serves as a resting place for migratory birds like the Corn Crake (Crex crex) and Great Snipe (Gallinago media).
