South east birding destination
Pugu Hill is located near Dar es Salaam and is known for its rich biodiversity, including a variety of bird species. The area is characterized by miombo woodlands and coastal forests, which provide habitats for numerous birds. Birdwatchers can expect to see species such as the Pugu Greenbul, which is endemic to this region. Other notable birds include various sunbirds, hornbills, and raptors. The best time for birding in Pugu Hill is during the rainy season when migratory birds arrive and resident species are more active.
Selous Game Reserve, now part of Nyerere National Park, is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. It boasts a diverse range of ecosystems including rivers, lakes, and woodlands that support over 400 bird species. Birdwatchers can find a variety of waterbirds along the Rufiji River as well as woodland species in the surrounding areas. Notable birds include African Fish Eagles, Pel’s Fishing Owl, and various kingfishers. The best time for birding here is also during the rainy season from November to April when many migratory birds are present.
Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) offers exceptional birding opportunities with approximately 440 recorded bird species. The park’s diverse habitats such as lagoons, rivers (especially River Rufiji), islands, and channels attract both resident and migratory birds. Commonly seen species include the Mangrove Kingfisher, Boehm’s Bee-eater, Livingstone’s Flycatcher, and African Skimmer. April is particularly noted for birdwatching as many birds are nesting during this time
Rondo Plateau is located in the southern highlands of Tanzania and features montane forest ecosystems that are home to unique avian fauna. This area is less frequented by tourists compared to other regions but offers excellent birding opportunities with several endemic species found here. One of the endemic birds at Rondo plateau is Richenow’s Batis and various forest-dwelling sunbirds can be spotted in this region. The best time for birding at Rondo Plateau aligns with the rainy season when activity levels among bird’s increase.
