10 Days South West Tanzania

Overview of the Route

 The itinerary will cover several key locations south west Tanzania, starting from Mpanda and ending in Mbeya. The journey will include visits to Katavi National Park, Lake Tanganyika, the Ufipa Plateau, Kalambo Falls, Tunduma, and Kitulo National Park. Each of these destinations offers unique birds species and some of the western Tanzania endemics, you will have time to visit on the most beautiful habitats, our main habitat will be on the Miombo and the Grassland from Ufipa plateau and attractions. On this trip we will have many different bird’s species, but you will have a chance to observe Angola lark, brown fire finch, Tanzania masked weaver, chestnut-backed sparrow weaver.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Mpanda

  • Arrive in Mpanda either air from Dar es salama, then you will meet your guide drive at the Airstrip, from their you will drive to your accommodation then the drive he/she will give you a briefing for the next day’s according to your trip or the itinerary.
  • Explore the town and prepare for the upcoming journey.
  • Overnight stay in Mpanda.

Day 2: Mpanda to Katavi National Park

  • Depart early morning for Katavi National Park (approximately 2 hours’ drive).
  • Spend the day exploring the park known for its diverse wildlife including elephants, hippos, and various bird species.
  • Overnight camping or lodge accommodation within or near the park.

Day 3: Full Day at Katavi National Park

  • Continue exploring Katavi with guided game drives.
  • Visit specific areas like Katisunga Plains and Lake Katavi.
  • Overnight stay at the same accommodation.

Day 4: Katavi to Lake Tanganyika

  • Depart from Katavi heading towards Lake Tanganyika (approximately 3 hours’ drive).
  • Enjoy activities such as swimming, fishing, or relaxing by the lake.
  • Overnight stay at a lakeside lodge or campsite.

Day 5: Lake Tanganyika to Ufipa Plateau

  • Leave Lake Tanganyika early morning for Ufipa Plateau (approximately 2 hours’ drive).
  • Explore the plateau’s scenic views and local culture.
  • Consider visiting nearby villages to experience local life.
  • Overnight stay on the Ufipa Plateau.

Day 6: Ufipa Plateau to Kalambo Falls

  • Depart for Kalambo Falls (approximately 1.5 hours’ drive).
  • Visit one of Africa’s highest waterfalls; enjoy hiking around the area.
  • Take time to appreciate the natural beauty and photography opportunities.
  • Overnight stay near Kalambo Falls.

Day 7: Kalambo Falls to Tunduma

  • Travel from Kalambo Falls to Tunduma (approximately 1-hour drive).
  • Explore Tunduma town; this is also a border town with Zambia which can be interesting for cultural exchange.
  • Overnight stay in Tunduma.

Day 8: Tunduma to Kitulo National Park

  • Depart early morning for Kitulo National Park (approximately 2 hours’ drive).
  • Spend the day exploring this unique park known for its stunning wildflower displays and biodiversity.
  • Engage in guided walks through flower fields and enjoy birdwatching opportunities.
  • Overnight camping or lodge accommodation within or near Kitulo NP.

Day 9: Full Day at Kitulo National Park

  • Continue exploring Kitulo with more extensive hikes or nature walks.
  • Visit specific sites like Mount Rungwe if time permits.
  • Overnight stay at the same accommodation.

Day 10: Kitulo NP to Mbeya

  • Depart from Kitulo NP heading towards Mbeya (approximately 1.5 hours’ drive).
  • Arrive in Mbeya; explore local markets or historical sites if time allows.

Conclusion of Trip in Mbeya This itinerary provides a comprehensive exploration of some of Tanzania’s most beautiful natural landscapes while allowing ample time for wildlife viewing and cultural experiences.
