10-Day Birdwatching Safari in Northern Tanzania

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative who will assist you with your transfer to Arusha Town. You will stay overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge, where you will receive a briefing about the upcoming birdwatching tour.

Day 2: Arusha National Park The day begins with pre-breakfast birdwatching around the lodge grounds, where you may spot various species such as fire finches and variable sunbirds. After breakfast, you’ll head to Arusha National Park for a full day of birding. The park is home to diverse bird species including Macoa ducks, Egyptian Geese, and Trogons. A walking safari will also provide opportunities to see White Fronted Bee-eaters and the rare Spike-heeled Lark.

Day 3: Journey to Serengeti After an early breakfast, you will embark on a long drive to the Serengeti National Park. During the journey, keep an eye out for Sand grouses and guinea fowls. Upon arrival in the evening, check into Ikoma Bush Tented Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Birdwatching in Serengeti Start your day with a pre-breakfast bird walk focusing on Tanzanian endemics like Fischer’s Lovebird and Grey-breasted Spurfowl. After breakfast, continue exploring the Serengeti for more bird species such as Usambiro Barbets and Grey-capped Social Weavers throughout the day.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Depart from the Serengeti after breakfast and drive into Ngorongoro Crater. Here, look for endemic birds like Rufous-tailed Weaver and Golden-winged Sunbird while also enjoying sightings of large mammals such as elephants and various raptors soaring above.

Day 6: Lake Manyara National Park After breakfast, travel to Lake Manyara National Park known for its tree-climbing lions and diverse wildlife. Enjoy a picnic lunch within the park before continuing your exploration of its jungles where you can add more species to your list.

Day 7: Optional Activities at E Unoto Retreat You have the option for an early morning bird walk or spend the day game viewing in Lake Manyara or relaxing at your lodge with excellent birding opportunities from your balcony.

Day 8: Tarangire National Park Following breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park with packed lunches. Focus on spotting Tanzanian endemics including Rufous-tailed Weaver and Yellow-collared Lovebird throughout your explorations in this park known for its high concentration of elephants.

Day 9: Full Day in Tarangire Spend an entire day exploring Tarangire Plains where you can observe numerous birds along with elephants. Return to your lodge for dinner after a fulfilling day of wildlife viewing.

Day 10: Departure from Arusha Depending on flight arrangements, there may be time for additional birdwatching in Tarangire before returning to Arusha for outbound connections.
